This curated 5-Night, 6-Day Extreme Waterfall & Trekking Package covers some of the most dramatic, colossal, and hidden cascades in the Sahyadri range of Maharashtra.
Because these waterfalls are spread across different regions of the Western Ghats (Malshej Ghat, Lonavala, Tamhini Ghat, and Mahad), this itinerary is structured logically and geographically to minimize back-and-forth travel while tackling one epic trek per day.
5-Night, 6-Day
The Experience: Kalu is the highest waterfall in the Malshej region, plunging over 1,200 feet in four magnificent tiers. You will trek through the lush "God Valley" to witness its thundering roar.
The Trek: Moderate. A 5–6 km jungle trail from the base village of Thitabi/Savarne, involving river crossings.
Schedule:
Morning: Arrive at the base village early, enjoy a local Maharashtrian breakfast (Poha & Misal Pav), and begin the jungle trail.
Mid-Day: Reach the base of the massive fall. The mist and wind here are incredibly powerful. Enjoy a packed lunch or snacks.
Afternoon: Head back to the base village.
Evening: Drive down south towards Lonavala. Check into your eco-stay/hotel and rest your muscles.
The Experience: Tucked right behind the famous Rajmachi Fort, Kataldhar drops roughly 350 feet over a massive horseshoe-shaped cliff. It features an enormous eye-shaped cave right at its base.
The Trek: Moderate to Difficult. A 6 km trail starting near Fanasrai Village. The trick is the steep descent into the Ulhas Valley, meaning you have to climb all the way back up on your return.
Schedule:
Morning: Travel to the starting point near Rajmachi route. Descend through dense, mossy forests into the valley.
Mid-Day: Reach the massive eye-cave behind the waterfall curtain. Witness the sheer vertical drop of the water.
Afternoon: Begin the high-endurance climb back up to the plateau.
Evening: Return to Lonavala for a warm meal. Treat yourself to some local fudge and chikki before turning in.
The Experience: Named after a sacred rock pinnacle ("Lingya") worshipped by locals, this stunning cascade offers pristine valley views, stream swimming, and dense woods away from tourist crowds.
The Trek: Easy to Moderate. An 4–5 km undulating trail starting from Dhamanohol village (near Lavasa).
Schedule:
Morning: Drive from Lonavala toward the Lavasa/Mulshi backwaters. Reach the misty base village of Dhamanohol.
Mid-Day: Trek through dense canopies and cross bubbling streams to reach the hidden Lingya falls. Spend time swimming in the safe natural pools.
Afternoon: Head back to the village for an authentic, unlimited Maharashtrian Veg/Non-Veg Thali.
Evening: Take a scenic drive to the Tamhini Ghat region. Overnight stay at a cozy jungle homestay.
The Experience: One of Maharashtra's most famous and photogenic plunge waterfalls. The water falls from a height of 150 feet straight into a natural, crystal-clear pool with a distinct turquoise tint.
The Trek: Moderate. A highly scenic 5–6 km (one-way) flat trail from Bhira/Patnus village that crosses wooden bridges, rocky river beds, and thick jungle canopy.
Schedule:
Early Morning (06:30 AM): Start early to avoid the weekend crowds. The trail keeps you captivated with mountain backdrops and stream crossings.
Mid-Day: Reach the spectacular amphitheater cliff where Devkund drops. Note: Swimming is highly restricted/regulated here by local authorities for safety, but the view is unparalleled.
Afternoon: Trek back to Bhira for lunch.
Evening: Drive further south down the ghats toward Mahad. Check into your hotel or homestay in the historical town of Mahad.
The Experience: Located deep within the Raigad jungles in Gugulshi village, this colossal 400-foot waterfall looks like a pristine white sheet cutting through a deep green canyon into a clear blue basin. It is widely considered the highest waterfall in the Raigad district.
The Trek: Easy. A short 1.5–2 km trek through a deeply mystical jungle trail from the upper Nanemachi village patch.
Schedule:
Morning: Travel from Mahad to the base village. Climb the stony steps and walk the petrichor-scented forest paths.
Mid-Day: Stand before the roaring Nanemachi falls. Spend time soaking in the misty breeze at the viewpoint.
Afternoon: Walk back and visit the nearby Saatsada Waterfall (just 4 km away), which features seven distinct cascading steps.
Evening: Enjoy a farewell dinner featuring Konkani cuisine (Solkadhi, Ukadiche Modak) in Mahad.
Morning: Optional quick exploration of the ancient 3rd-century Gandharpale Caves located right on the outskirts of Mahad.
Afternoon: Check out from the hotel. Drive back to Mumbai (approx. 3.5 hours) or Pune (approx. 4 hours via Varandha Ghat) for your onward journey.
- Transport: Private AC SUV or Tempo Traveller (highly recommended because state transport buses can be unpredictable and these locations require navigating winding ghat roads).
- Accommodation: 5 Nights in standard eco-resorts/homestays (Lonavala, Tamhini, and Mahad).
- Meals: 5 Breakfasts, 5 Dinners, and 5 Lunches (emphasizing local home-cooked Maharashtrian meals at the base villages which supports local communities).
- Trek Leaders: Certified local Sahyadri trek guides for Kalu, Kataldhar, and Devkund (critical for navigating changing water levels safely).
- Permits: Forest department entry fees and local gram panchayat toll taxes for Devkund and Rajmachi/Kataldhar.
