Today excursion to Mawphlang – a sacred grove. (Here in the sacred grove you have to walk into the forest for around 600-700 mts in Plains.)
As a part of their cultural and religious beliefs the khasi of Meghalaya practice an age-old tradition of preserving primary forest patches near their settlements .These forests are a deep insight into the history and religious beliefs of the people of Meghalaya. They believe that Khasi deities live inside them so any harm procured to the plants or the animals would offend them. No one is allowed to take anything out of the grove not even a dead dried twig. These groves are generally rimmed by a dense growth of Castanopsiskurzii trees, forming a protective hedge which halts intrusion of Pinuskhasia (Khasi pine) which dominates all areas outside the sacred groves. Inside the outer rim, the sacred groves are virtually Nature's Own Museum. The heavily covered grounds have a thick cushion of humus accumulated over the centuries. The trees in every sacred groveare heavily loaded with epiphytic growth of aroids, pipers, ferns, fern-allies and orchids. The humus-covered grounds likewise harbour myriad varieties of plant life, many of which are found nowhere else.
